This short chapter book revolves around two cats. Stump, a young Russian Blue, is rather excitable, and inexperienced. Mugsy, an older gray Tabby, is cairn and experienced in the ways of life. In this Adventure, the cats' owners will not let the cats into one room in the house, where they have previously had full access. Stump, glimpsing a wrapped bundle in the room, believes the humans have a surprise present for them, and goes to great lengths to find out what it is. Mugsy, who has been through this routine before, already knows that "bundle" is a new baby, and he grows quite tired of Stumps relentless pursuit of the "present" fantasy. In the end, the humans introduce the baby to the cats, and Stump is forced to admit to Mugsy that he might have been wrong. When he gets a chance to inspect the baby, however, he maintains his belief that the humans have given the cats the best present possible.
